Satellite Radio - The SIRIUS XM Entertainment Lineup

Those people who subscribe to Sirius XM Radio don't want to do without it, so the majority considers the merger a good thing. The FCC looked at this merger carefully due to its smacking of a monopoly, but without this merger both companies may have slowly circled the drain forever, operating in the red and reducing their program before disappearing into the bankruptcy courts and having to deal with unhappy customers.

Instead, they combined forces under the old "united we stand" mantra and many don't think the programming has suffered. Yes, you may have to find your favorites again, as many genres changed station locations, but all in all, the lineup is still comprehensive and has something for everyone. Here is the lineup under the 'entertainment' category, which includes shock radio, adult radio and comedy.

ENTERTAINMENT:

  • 99-Playboy Radio Smart & Sexy Adult Radio

  • 100-Howard 100 Shock Radio-Hear the Revolution

It's up to you to make the decision on whether to subscribe or not. The above stations are just one part of the SIRIUS Everything Plus the Best of XM Package. You can opt for lower priced packages, but this is the premier. There are also great programming options under Music, Sports and Talk and Family Friendly programming. You can also listen to any station online and even download the SIRIUS online radio from the site.

In addition, you can purchase any number of variable equipment options, from portable radios that can move from your house to your car, to radios that allow you to pause, rewind and replay up to 60 minutes of live radio. Some systems allow you to set alerts for specific artists or to switch between SIRIUS and XM programs with the push of a button if you are subscribed to the older system. Also watch for Free Shipping and Free trail downloads. Sirius.com even has installation tips and online support for your car and home and a clearance section where you can buy discontinued gear and accessories, as well as reconditioned radios and radio packages.

I believe that you'll agree that you really get your money's worth with SIRIUS XM and it is a heck of a lot cheaper than commercial-free watching on premium channels with cable or satellite systems. Check it out!

Gaming Headsets

Headsets or headphones are actually miniature speaker systems. They are stereo hearing systems that are wearable, providing mobility to the user. Traditional headsets were bulky and large with two speakers for both ears encased in padded ovular ear cups. These ear cups were attached to a headband in the shape of an arch that went over the head. Each of these ear cups had a signal wire joined down together as a single wire, which was connected to the audio player/radio through a headphone jack.

Today, normal headsets can't match the excitement generated by computer games. To feel the real action you need a headset that delivers the right acoustics and sound effects to make the game sound real. Modern gaming headsets have stereo sound effects to suit the high-definition audio that most games have. Plus, they are lightweight and comfortable, with flexible and unobtrusive wiring to wear for longer hours. There are also cordless gaming handsets.

The basic aspects to be considered while buying a headset are: is it comfortable? Does it stay securely in place for long hours? Is the microphone flexible and unobtrusive? Is the cord long enough for easy movement? Are the volume and other controls easily accessible? Is the sound quality on both the lines clear?

The leading manufacturers of gaming headsets are Plantronics, GN Netcom, Headsets.com, Sennheiser, Jabra, and Sony. Gaming headsets are also very inexpensive, depending on the kind of model. A good pair of headphones costs around $10 though a model with all the works may cost up to $150-$200 or more. The Internet is a good source for locating the ideal gaming headset. There are several web sites that provide comprehensive information about the wide range of gaming headsets available in the market today.

Headsets provides detailed information about headsets, wireless headsets, phone headsets, aviation headsets and more. Headsets is the sister site of Free Phone Conferencing.

Portable Internet Radio - Internet Radio Receivers

First, internet radio "broadcasts" can be either a play list, an actual radio broadcast, or a combination of both. What I'm speaking of here is a stand alone appliance for tuning to an online radio station with its' own call sign/station designation, just like traditional radio.

Radios such as these will cost anywhere from about $100.00-$300.00 depending on the factors discussed below. These receivers acquire their signal via antenna, Ethernet or wifi, depending on your preference, although wifi probably lends the most versatility, when connected via your router.

They come with a variety of features/capabilities. When connecting without a computer refer to the manual which should be included for setup instructions. Access is through a server which you log onto, enter your model number/code which configures the receiver. Depending on what software your radio is based will determine the ease of acquiring streams(broadcasts).

The tricky part has to do with the software upon which radios are based. Although there are a number of very good U.S. alternatives, I would recommend those which are Reciva based out of the U.K., and marketed here. This company is sometimes referred to as the "Microsoft" of the internet radio business in terms of dominance, and have access to some 16,000+ feeds.

Through their web portal, you can register and customize the stations appearing on your radios' dial through "my stations." Most reputable servers will enable access to thousands of broadcasts in their database. The ability of adding URLs not in their database is another desirable capability to consider when making your choice. That's it, as far as the basic procedure. Additional aspects to consider include: Sound quality, Network connectivity, and Extras which may offer enhanced versatility.

Sound quality: Whether the stream is 32k mono, or 128k stereo plays a large part in terms of the overall enjoyment experience, especially when playing music stored on a local file server(home or office computer). This is coupled with speaker response, in terms of dynamic range, highs and lows for overall sound presence.

Network connectivity, meaning the time from powering on and hearing music can vary widely from 4sec to 25sec. Broken connections can be a recurring problem. External antennas, and ethernet ports can help in these cases.

Extras items to look for would be direct 120v inputs(US only), or if you travel abroad, transformer powered. Is radio battery operated for portability? Can you record stations easily? Does it have a headphone jack(audio out), audio in/aux(mp3 player), remote control, alarm clock, FM tuner, dual speakers, etc.?

The Newbie's Guide to Buying Radio Scanners

If you're gong to buy a radio scanner, familiarity with its basic features is necessary. You also have to be aware of its legal status, when it can be used and its limitations.

What Can a Radio Scanner Do?

It depends on the type of radio you get. But most scanners let you tune in to authorities as they interrogate suspects and try to control hostile crowds. You can also tune in to paramedics and firefighters as they go about their tasks.

You can listen in to commercial aircraft and choppers as they fly. You can also hear military aircraft and race car drivers. Other services you can hear when you buy a radio include the National Weather Service, amateur radio operators and CB radio.

Are Radio Scanners Legal?

All the chatter you hear on scanners is legal. However, the law forbids using a radio scanner to listen in to cell phone conversations or encrypted communications. Most scanners cannot unscramble encoded communication messages.

Even if the scanner can pick them up, it is illegal to listen in. Some states also impose some limitations on using scanners while in the car. There are no legal restrictions when listening to radio scanners at home.

Before you buy a radio scanner, it's a good idea to know something of the various accessories these scanners come with.

Flexible Antennas

Flexible antennas (also known as rubber ducks) are fitted on most radio. These are made of wire covered in rubber plastic. While commonplace, the reception can be weak at times. You need to look at different brands to find one that works for you.

Telescoping Whip Antenna

These are metal antennas constructed of short tubes. They are superior to rubber ducks in terms of performance.

Car Antennas

Also called mobile antennas, these are available in two types: magnetic mount and glass mount. When you buy a radio magnetic mount antenna, it will use the car's plane to facilitate reception. The glass mounted antennas require an adhesive and must be attached to the window. The magnetic antennas provide a better signal.

Outdoor Antennas

These antennas are mounted on the roof like outdoor TV antennas. The higher the antenna is, the better the reception.

Coaxial Cables

These will be used to connect the antenna to the radio scanner. Avoid cables with high signal loss as this will result in poor performance.

Cables with tolerable loss are the following: G-59, RG-6, 9913, RG-213, Belden 8214 and RG-8. Do not use RG-174 and RG-58. Hardline cables provide excellent quality but are very expensive. They can also be quite difficult to set up. Get cables with connectors to reduce the use of adaptors.

Note: bands at the 450-470 and 800/900 MHz frequencies need cables with as low signal loss as possible.

It's easy enough to buy a radio scanner these days. But unless you know the accessories available you won't be able to maximize its use, so a little research will go a long way.

The Basics of Satellite Radio Systems

Satellite radio systems are the consumer's access to space-based audio technology, offering uncensored, commercial-free programming that comes in crystal clear no matter where you are. But how do they actually work?

The most basic explanation is as follows: programming is transmitted to a communications space satellite, which beams a digital signal back to earth. The signal is encrypted, so it can only be picked up by special proprietary equipment. The signal can be broadcast across more than 22,000 miles and received by the end user with absolutely no degradation in clarity or sound quality.

But the basics are only a small part of what makes satellite radio systems work. Many innovations and the use of cutting-edge communications technology have brought digital radio a long way from where it began just over a decade ago.

Digital radio was actually operating in the early 1990s, with Washington-based Worldspace Corp. providing fixed-location satellite radio to Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa. However the technology didn't take off in the US until 1992, when the Federal Communications Commission established the Digital Audio Radio Service (DARS) which allocated certain segments of radio frequency for satellite broadcast.

Two companies bid for and won licences to broadcast in the allotted frequencies: American Mobile Radio, which later become XM Radio, paid $93 million for licensing, and Sirius Satellite Radio forerunner CD Radio paid $89 million. XM made its nationwide debut in 2001, and Sirius followed in 2002.

Though both companies offer more than 100 channels of commercial-free programming that's available anywhere in the US, they took different technological routes to achieve universal coverage.

XM's system relies on two powerful geostationary satellites positioned directly above the equator, which are programmed to move in synchronization with the movement of the earth. To overcome interference from physical obstacles such buildings and mountains, the XM service service relies on a network of repeaters, which are antennas that receive the radio signal from the satellites and retransmit it to the subscriber's receiver.

The Sirius system is based on a trio of satellites that travel in figure-8 shaped orbits. Because these orbiting satellites can rise much higher than geostationary satellites, interference from physical objects is minimized and a large network of repeaters is unnecessary. To keep the signal steady during the eight hours daily that the Sirius satellites' orbit takes them to the other side of the earth, the company leases capacity on a geostationary satellite which feeds the signal to subscribers.

Satellite radio service also depends on digital compression technology, a technique that uses sophisticated algorithms to compress as much material as possible on the available bandwidth.

SIRIUS Backseat TV Option For New Cars

Although SIRIUS satellite radio has been a great consideration for homes, this is now offered to people on the go. Although there are many automobile companies now offering SIRIUS to customers, two in particular are taking this option to the highest level - Chrysler and Volvo. This means in addition to owning a great vehicle, consumers can also listen to satellite radio while driving right off the lot.

For the Chrysler Group, 2008 vehicles rolling off the line now have options for satellite radio, as well as SIRIUS Backseat Television. With this, vehicle owners can provide programming in the car, which is great for taking road trips. For instance, families with children know all too well that kids get bored in the car. Now children can enjoy age-appropriate programming to make the trip far more enjoyable.

With SIRIUS Backseat Television, programming is provided from only the best and most trusted stations. Children can watch things such as the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and even the Cartoon network, loved by kids and parents. All 2008 Chrysler cars and even Jeep, which is made by Chrysler has this options. Even the Dodge Grand Caravan will be rolling out these mobile televisions, which is making serious waves.

Other vehicles offering SIRIUS programming include the Dodge Magnum, Chrysler 300, Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Dodge Charger, and the Jeep Commander. Using the in-vehicle receiver along with two antennas that are mounted to the roof of the vehicle, SIRIUS Backseat Television can be worked with the simple touch of a button. The second and third row video screens display the programming of choice. Included with this display is the title of the program, the name of the channel, and even the rating, which is a huge advantage for parents. This way, they know what the children are watching to ensure little eyes are seeing only what they should see and nothing more.

Additionally, the television option can be operated with the radio head or the rear seat entertainment unit. The advantage is while families are on a road trip; the kids can be watching the Disney Channel while mom and dad in the front seat can be listening to jazz, country, rock and roll, or whatever music venue they like best in the front seat.

Volvo is also getting into the action for SIRIUS satellite by incorporating the radio system in new cars. Creating a partnership between Volvo and SIRIUS has provided a means for more and more customers to enjoy the finest listening possible. For instance, cars created in 2007 include the C70, V50, S40, and all S80 automobiles.

Consumers need to remember that Volvo has a high reputation for providing one of the best sound systems on the market. This means the Dolby Pro Logic II Surround and Dynaudio systems already installed in Volvo cars coupled with SIRIUS makes for the perfect sound. Consumers can listen to all types of music, along with news, entertainment, talk, and sports without interruption of commercials.
